Used Skid Steer Trailers

A used skid steer, or a new one, is like the worker bee of a bee colony that does ten times the work of others.  A worker bee gathers food, ventilates the hive, constructs cells, and protects the hive.  Used skid steer also, likewise, manage construction, demolition, leveling, dumping, hauling, and what not! With different attachments, a used skid steer incarnates as a new, perfectly efficient machine.

Because of its versatility, a used skid steer could always be on the move, taking up new jobs.  A Used Skid Steer is designed to be mobile, but its very mobility warrants that a used skid steer is transported safely.  The efficiency of a used skid steer will be compromised if a used skid steer is transferred to another place in a slipshod manner.  As such, efficient towing and connected proper trailer maintenance is important in keeping a used skid steer well-oiled and efficient.

Appropriate Trailer for a Used Skid Steer

To pick up the best trailer for one’s used skid steer, the owner should be thorough with the dimensions of the used skid steer they will be transporting. AEM or the Association of Equipment Manufacturers recognizes nine types of used skid steer. The classification may be based on operating capacity or operating weight.  Operating capacity is 50 % of the capacity at which the back wheels of the used skid steer can lift off the ground. This classification is, however, not important in deciding on the used skid steer trailer to be used for its hauling. The classification based on operating weight is taken into consideration in transportation matters. Operating weight is the used skid steer machine’s entire weight including tire, bucket, gas and operator.  The operating weight of most used skid steer are somewhere between 4,000 lb and 9,900 lb.

GVWR of a Trailer:

The first job while transporting a used skid steer is to know the operating weight of the used skid steer. Then the weight of the attachment for that particular operation should be taken into consideration. It could be a shovel once, a rake another time, or a backhoe a third time. Either of these would mostly be an additional 2000 lb. After the weight has been calculated, the owner can search for a used skid steer trailer with proportionate GVWR or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. GVWR of a vehicle is the vehicle weight plus carrying capacity.

“All used skid steer trailers have a GVWR, which is the gross vehicle weight rating. A 6,000-lb axle weight package has two 6,000-lb axles, so the GVWR is 12,000 lbs. But then you have to subtract the weight of the trailer, which is around 2,300 lbs. That would give you the weight of what you could haul. So if you had a 12,000-lb GRWR trailer, then your used skid steer could be 9,700 lbs or less. And if it’s over that, then you probably need to go up to a 7,000-lb package, which would be a 14,000-lb GVWR.”

For transporting a used skid steer, a trailer with a GVWR that allows for an extra 1500 lb load will be ideal. That size is necessary to ensure safe transportation. A trailer of that size protects the sturdy used skid steer, and ensures that the trailer is not taxed too much.
